Miami Lakes Library Branch September programs

Miami Lakes Branch Library announced the following programs that are available for the public during September:

For Children and Families: 

Junior Super Smash Bros. Challenge – Get ready to put your Super Smash Bros. skills to the test. Best for ages 7-11 years old at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 2.

Movies and Stories for Kids – Enjoy watching some of our favorite movies with your family and friends. Call for visit branch for movie listings. Presented by the Town of Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board at 3 p.m. on Wednesdays, September 6, 13 and 20. 

Paws to Read – This reading program aims to improve the literacy skills of children through the assistance of therapy dogs who serve as literacy mentors. Participants may bring a book or choose one from the branch collection. Scheduled at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 9. 

Tween Book Club – Tweens, children ages 8 to 12, meet, read and discuss books once a month. Call the branch for this month’s title. Scheduled for 11 a.m. on Wednesday, September 3.

Talking is Teaching. Talk, Read, Sing for Toddlers en dos idiomas – Join the branch for bilingual stories, songs and activities for toddles. Best for ages  18 months to 3 years old. Space is limited. Scheduled for 11 a.m. on Thursdays, September 14, 21 and 28.   

STEM Saturdays – An Edible Experiment - Make your own Ice Cream. Join in the first experiment of this academic year. Have fun making real ice cream just by using rock salt and other ingredients while you learn about chemistry. For ages 5 to 15 years old. Scheduled at 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 16. 

Homeschool Science Class - Learn how to create different science projects. Space is limited. Contact branch to register. Scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 20.

Science in the City – Enjoy hands-on lessons infused with experiments to spark interest in STEM. Each new lesson builds upon the previous lesson. For ages 8-18 years old. Space is limited. Contact branch to register. Scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 23. 

Mario Kart Tournament – Attention gamers of all ages! Challenge friends and compete for a chance to win a prize by playing Mario Kart 8 for WiiU. Gaming rounds will be held for children, teens and adults. Winners will move on to the final rounds at the Main Library Mini Con on Saturday, November 4. Bring your own controller or use one at the branch. Space is limited. Contact the branch to register. Scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 30.

For Teens: 

Teen Club Presents Movie Night – Teen Club members will watch a teen-related film and discuss afterwards. In honor of back-to-school, the branch will screen “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” presented by the Town of Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 5. 

Teen Club – Play video games, watch anime, draw, play Dungeons and Dragons or discuss books. For ages 12-18 years old at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 12. 

Dungeons and Dragons Club - Play this fantasy role playing game and create your own adventure. For ages 13 and up at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, September 18. 

Teen Club Presents: Horror Makeup 101 - Get ready for Halloween! Join makeup artist Heather Green as she demonstrates the techniques you need for basic horror makeup creations. Space is limited. Contact the branch to register. For ages 12-18 years old. Presented by the Town of Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, September 26. 

Teen Club: Naruto Shippuden Ultimate Ninja Storm – North vs. South. Teens from the Miami Lakes Branch will battle live online against the West Kendall Regional Library for the first time at 2 p.m. on Thursday, September 28.     

For Adults:  

Citizenship Conversation Circle – Join in practicing English for the citizenship questions. This is an informal group to help participants feel comfortable in speaking for their naturalization interview at 3 p.m. on Fridays, September 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29. 

Meditation Classes – Join in for meditation derived from Raja Yoga, a discipline that helps develop inner calm, clear thinking and personal well being. Scheduled for 11 a.m. on Fridays, September 8, 15, 22 and 29. 

Book Discussion Group – Call or visit the branch for this month’s title. Scheduled for 6 p.m. on Tuesday, September 19. 

USCIS Information Table – U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service staff will provide information, materials and answer general questions about the citizenship process, at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, September 25.  

Mario Diaz-Balart Outreach Table – A member of Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart’s staff will be available to discuss federal issues and address any concerns a constituent may have with a federal agency from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 27. 

Miami Lakes Branch Library is located at 6699 Windmill Gate Road and is open Monday and Tuesday from noon to 8 p.m., and Wednesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The branch is closed on Sundays. For more information, call 305-822-6520.
