Pride flag flies above Main Street
The rainbow flag began flying over Main Street in Miami Lakes on Wednesday.
It was raised by The Graham Companies and residents Leslie Langbein and Esther Colon.
This weekend, the majestic live oak on Main Street is to be bathed in rainbow-colored lights to celebrate Pride Month.
The nighttime lighting is to continue through the end of June.
The recognition of LGBTQ rights in Miami Lakes happened during a week when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that employers cannot discriminate against workers who are gay or transgender.
It was also a week when the town's Cultural Affairs Committee asked the Miami Lakes council about flying the Pride flag at Town Hall; having a vigil or march in support of social and racial justice and perhaps flying a flag to support Black Lives Matter.
The council did not put the proposals to a vote and sought further input from the committee about future programming.
