Ramadan, the holy month of fasting, reflection and prayer for Muslims, begins April 12 and lasts until May 12.

The daily fasts begin at dawn and are broken at sunset with meals shared with family and friends.

The religion teaches that at this time of year, Muhammad received revelations which became the Quran, the Muslim holy book, according to History.com. During Ramadan, bad behavior and intimate activities are to be put aside, according to the website.

The end of the month is celebrated with the three-day festival Eid al-Fitr, a time of fast breaking, special prayers and gift giving.
