Town of Miami Lakes, in conjunction with its YMCA Summer Camp, offered a two-day program in late July to 100 youngsters for an insight into the world of aviation through Operation SAFEE Flight Academy with activities at both Roberto Alonso Community Center and Opa Locka Airport.
On the first day, campers interacted with aviation professionals, experienced flight simulators, and took part in NASA Smart Skies training and other Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM) educational activities.
Participants experienced day two at Opa Locka Airport where they took to the skies in a Cessna 172 aircraft during Discovery flights, and took tours of the airport’s Traffic Control Tower and the U.S. Coast Guard facility among other activities.
“The Operation SAFEE Flight Academy provides fun and educational activities for our kids and offers then an introduction to the exciting world of aviation, said Councilmember Frank Mingo. “I was happy to help make this happen with the support of my colleagues.”
