Miami-Dade County School Board chair Perla Tabares Hantman served as a panelist on transportation safety at the Safe Routes to Schools National Conference in Sacramento, California, in mid-August.

The conference was sponsored by the National Center for Safe Routes to School and the Safe Routes to School National Partnership and attracted 600 participants from around the nation.

Hantman was featured on a panel titled “Maximizing Opportunities for Safe and Active Transportation” where she spoke about the successful Safe Routes to School program in Miami-Dade County.

During her tenure on the School Board, Hantman has been a champion of initiatives dealing with student safety. “Miami-Dade County Public Schools is committed to establishing a Safe Routes to School program for all schools in the District to make it as safe as possible for students to walk or bicycle to school every day,” Hantman said.

Since 2007, the School Board has endorsed and submitted more than 75 Federal Safe Routes to School program applications, resulting in over $10.6 million in awarded funds.
