September is National Preparedness Month and a recent survey conducted by the Office of Emergency Management revealed that the number one reason why residents do not evacuate when they are advised is because they do not want to leave their pets behind.
Although we are well into hurricane season, it’s not too late to get prepared. Having a disaster preparedness plan for yourself as well as for your pets can provide you peace of mind.
Miami-Dade Animals Services offers residents online tips on how to prepare for hurricane season.
For starters, pet owners that reside in qualified evacuation zones (including unsafe structures or trailer homes) can fill out a form to partake in the Pet-Friendly Evacuation Centers (PEC). It’s important to note, however, that filling out the form does not ensure acceptance into the shelter. To apply for entrance into the PEC, you must submit your application by visiting www.miamidade.gov/animals.
Currently, the two centers in Miami-Dade County that accept pets during emergencies are the E. Darwin Fuchs Pavilion located at 10901 S.W. 24 Street, and Dr. Michael M. Krop Senior High School at 1410 N.E. 215 Street.
These shelters accept not only cats and dogs but also small household pets such as ferrets, guinea pigs, rabbits (under 10 pounds), birds, mice/rats, hamsters and gerbils. Additionally, PEC only allows four pets per household and owners must be prepared to maintain and care for their pets at all times.
The same way you prepare a disaster kit for yourself and your family, you should also prepare one for your pet(s). A pet’s disaster kit should contain the necessary essentials such as food, water, cleaning supplies, first aid supplies, pet medications and pet identification. Animal Services provides an extensive checklist which pet owners can review, which is available in English, Spanish and Creole.
