Miami Lakes’ Team Mooo was recognized as the second highest fund-raisers for this year’s American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life event, raising $4,200 to help the voluntary health organization find a cure for the deadly disease.

The group of high-school students were honored by Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza in Miami Lakes for their fundraising efforts.

Team Mooo raised the money with car washing events and the group enjoyed success at an event at Menchies in Miami Lakes, where they helped sell ice cream and frozen yogurt, and 20 percent of the sales went to the group for their efforts.

The group is already planning fund-raisers for next year’s Relay for Life event and looking for other teenagers to join them.

“This is very important because cancer strikes every single family, every single day,” said team member Christina Franco. “We must find a cure for this disease.”

Team Mooo was formed after team member Michael Barcelo was diagnosed with Leukemia at the age of 3, and his friends helped raise money to find a cure for people who were stricken with cancer.

Throughout the years, the same group of students, who are now in high-school, are still collecting money for the worthy cause and participating in the annual American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life in Miami Lakes.

Michael is now 15 years-old.

But for the first time, the group did the fundraisers on their own this year.

In the previous years, their parents helped them with their activities.
