BGEC students score in U.S. Constitution competitions

Bob Graham Education Center’s Civic Engagement Academy won first place in Miami-Dade County Public School’s “We the People” district competition on Jan. 9, and placed second at the state contest in Lakeland, Fla. on Jan. 31. Hialeah Gardens High School's football coach Greg Magner received coach of the week recognition by the Miami Dolphins. He was awarded a plaque during a game against the Jets on Nov. 3, 2019 at halftime.

The Dolphins celebrate those with long-standing tenure in the community. Magner has been coaching for over 35 years in South Florida, and for the past three years at HGSH.

Spanish Lake Elementary School students imagined what words Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. might use if he had an Instagram account. On Jan. 15, Lesley Carballo’s fifth grade class watched a program on King’s life and then created bricks emblazoned with words such as peace; equality; acceptance; rights and nonviolence to honor the late civil rights leader. Two local high schools welcomed new principals at the start of 2020. Hialeah-Miami Lakes Senior High School brought Alexander Santoyo on board, and Miami Lakes Educational Center and Technical College welcomed Yaset Fernandez, both in the first week of January.
