BGEC salutes retiring food service manager

After 21 years spent nourishing children enrolled in Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Food Service Assistant Manager Gina Rodriguez retired in April. It can be tough to learn remotely, on both the students and their teachers who have all had to adjust during the coronavirus pandemic. The student council at Bob Graham Education Center created a photo collage to salute their educators at the school, which has its campus at
15901 NW 79th Ave. in Miami Lakes.

With an $800 grant from The Education Fund in Miami Lakes, students at Hialeah-Miami Lakes Senior High School this school year learned about gardening and nutrition. The kids planted seeds and grew herbs and vegetables. They also attended a Zoom class with Chef Paula Kendrick, of the Florida Dept. of Agriculture and Consumer Services, to learn how to prepare and eat what they grew. The Kislak Family Foundation granted $100,000 in April to the Florida Literacy Coalition. The gift from the Miami Lakes-based charity will support new adult education and family reading and writing programs in the state, the coalition said in a press statement. Two students from American Senior High School will attend Ivy League schools in the fall.
