Forget birthday gifts: fourth grader asks instead for supplies for Hurricane Dorian victims

A fourth grade student at Bob Graham Education Center put aside his hopes for gifts on his 10th birthday and instead, asked his friends to donate supplies for victims of Hurricane Dorian. Robert Mathieu celebrated his birthday Sept. 14. He’s shown in the photo above surrounded by donations on stage at the school that is at 15901 NW 79th Ave. in Miami Lakes.
Robert doesn’t have ties to the Bahamas, but his parents taught him that service and being kind to others is paramount, Principal Yecenia Martinez said. “We are so proud of his lovely act of kindness,” Martinez said, adding that the donations will help many families. -- Megan Medina
