Two Miami Lakes Educational Center students were recently recognized for their efforts at the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.

Seniors Rachel Vasco and Aztil Duarte are part of MLEC’s Commercial Arts Technology program. The pair earned national medals at the awards for their art.

Rachel created a drawing titled “Perfect Failure” and Aztil a photo called “Sense of Comfort” featuring a small rabbit.

“Rachel and Aztil’s national recognition places them among an elite group of young artists,” MLEC Magnet Lead David Galarce wrote an email, adding that they were being recognized “for their originality, skill, and personal artistic vision.”

The awards recognize students in the United States and Canada who submit original works of art and writing in 29 categories. Galarce also singled out their teacher, Odalis Soto.

“Their achievement highlights not only their remarkable talent and dedication,” Galarce wrote. “But also, the strength of MLEC’s Commercial Arts Technology program and the mentorship of Ms. Soto.”
