Hialeah-Miami Lakes High School Senior Maurits Acosta will serve as the Miami-Dade County School Board’s student advisor this school year.
“I decided to run to be student advisor to the board to improve the student experience in our public schools and continue to help develop a culture where the student voice is a top priority for our district,” said Maurits, 17, of Hialeah.
“I hope to live a life dedicated to public service.”
The student advisor is an elected position. The student must be a senior, enroll in a leadership course and report to a district administrator and the school board chair’s administrative assistant.
For the past three years, Maurits has been heavily involved in the District Student Government Association, Elmo Lugo, media relations director for the district, said in an email.
He will serve as the voice for students in front of the board, will work with members as a liaison to students and will also interact with the superintendent’s office.
Maurits will also attend Miami-Dade County Association of Student Government Presidents meetings and be a student voice in the community.
The school board streams its monthly meetings on its website. For more information go to https://bit.ly/3WQd8v7.
