Jessica Romero,10th grade Advanced Placement (AP) Art History teacher, was named Teacher of the Year at Barbara Goleman Senior High School (BGHS). Romero is the Fine Arts Department head as well as the school’s Activities Director.
In addition to teaching sophomores, Romero teaches other levels as well. She also sponsors the Student Government Association (SGA) a feat, she says, holds a special place in her heart.
“I have the opportunity to meet some of our school’s best and brightest students,” Romero says.
Romero is a Florida International University alumni and she is currently enrolled in Nova Southeastern University to earn her masters degree. Her passion for teaching began at a young age when she became fascinated with history. Teaching is in her genes, with Romero’s mother being an art teacher for 25 years.
“I always knew I wanted to have a profession that honored this love (for history), but I didn’t always know what this was,” Romero said.
Romero has been teaching at BGHS since the beginning of her career 18 years ago. In addition to being honored as Teacher of the Year, Romero has also been selected as one of the five North Region Teacher of the Year finalists.
