Education By The Miami Laker staff Friday, August 2, 2013

Lawton Chiles Middle School is launching the Cambridge Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE) program for the new school year. The program was brought to Lawton Chiles through the vision, support and involvement of Miami-Dade County Public School Board Chair Perla Hantman-Tabares, superintendent Alberto Carvalho, assistant superintendent Jose Dotres, North Region superintendent Vivian Santiesteban-Pardo and Lawton Chiles principal Nelson Izquierdo.

Currently, 150 highly motivated students have been selected to participate in the inaugural year of the Cambridge AICE program. Sixth grade student enrollment has increased by over 80 students and is still growing. These students will have the opportunity to receive Cambridge University curricula infused at an appropriate pace in their core classes.

These students will also be exposed to a technology strand through the iPrep Mathematics program with the use of smart-boards, laptops, and research based computer programs. Students will work with hands-on project base learning as they are guided into becoming 21st century learners. The opportunity to earn up to four high school credit courses before entering high school is also available to students.

Teachers have been carefully selected and received professional development this summer from staff trained on the Cambridge AICE program. Lawton Chiles will have a team of eight teachers in sixth and seventh grades teaching in the Cambridge program.

This program will provide a rigorous curriculum and prepare students for university  work since the Cambridge program is recognized by all Ivy League universities. The education students will receive is nationally and internationally recognized, creating an outstanding opportunity for student admittance and success in renown universities.

Lawton Chiles is located at 8190 N.W. 197 Street. For more information call 305-816-9101 or visit www.lcms.dadeschools.net.
