The Florida Dairy Farmers chose Mater Academy Charter Middle/High School volleyball head coach Elsa Lopez Class 6A Coach of the Year for volleyball.
Lopez led the girls team to the 2020 Class 6A State Championship in November and the school’s first state title in girls volleyball.
The Lady Lions finished the season 9-2, which was shortened due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Mater Academy Charter/Middle, at 7901 NW 103rd St. in Hialeah Gardens, was ranked No. 3 in the state and knocked off last year’s regional champions, powerhouse St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale, to win the 2020 regional crown.
“It was a huge accomplishment for the girls this season,” Lopez said. “They put it all together and knew what it would take to get to there.”
The Dairy Farmers Awards are voted upon by a statewide panel of high school coaches and members of the media.
The Florida Dairy Farmers honor coaches and athletes from sports sanctioned by the Florida High School Athletic Association.
