Mater honors Emily Acosta with alumni game April 11

Mater Academy High is honoring alumnus Emily Acosta, who was killed last week in a car accident near her school in Southwest Florida, by creating a scholarship in name.
Mater Academy will host an alumni basketball game to collect funds to set up the scholarship, which is scheduled for 7 p.m., Thursday, April 11 at the the school’s gymnasium, 7700 N.W. 98 Street in Hialeah Gardens.
Acosta, a student at Ave Maria University in Naples was killed in a car crash near the school. She was 20.
The private Catholic university held a vigil and a memorial Mass for the junior who was a Health Science mayor and Psychology minor and played basketball and softball.
According to police, Acosta lost control of her 2012 Honda Civic, crossed into the eastbound lanes and hit a truck carrying tomatoes.
Her passenger, Kathryn Houbolt, of Oak Lawn, Illinois, was seriously injured.
At Mater Academy, Acosta excelled in the classroom and basketball and softball, making the Miami-Herald All-Dade teams for both sports.
