The competition's categories included behavioral and social sciences, biochemistry, botany, chemistry, computer science, engineering, mathematics, microbiology, zoology, earth and planetary science, environmental science, physics, astronomy, medicine and health.

Students were awarded certificates, medals, trophies, and cash prizes. Students and parents also had the opportunity to learn more about MDC's academic programs and financial aid processes.

Local schools that competed and were named winners for various categories included Bob Graham Education Center, Joella C. Good Elementary School, Miami Lakes K-8 Center, Lawton Chiles Middle School, Country Club Middle School, Mater Gardens Academy, American Senior High School, Hialeah Gardens Senior High School, Barbara Goleman Senior High School, Youth Co-Op Charter School, and Mater Academy Charter High School.

The STEM Expo was held in conjunction with the Science, Engineering, Communication, Mathematics Enhancement (SECME) program, which directly impacts students in grades K-12.
