HML Debate Team continues pursuit of national title

     Hialeah-Miami Lakes Senior High Speech and Debate team continue their win streak taking 1st Place at the Stearns, Weaver, Miller Policy Debate Tournament on Jan. 10. 

The competition held at Miami Dade College’s North Campus is part of the Miami Dade Urban Debate League. The Trojans took home the team sweepstakes trophy, which is 1st Place for the competition, the school said. 

     “Our record at the tournament was 10-4, with two teams going undefeated throughout the entire tournament,” Speech and Debate Sponsor Michelle Simon wrote in an email. 

Jayden Sampedro, Lucia Bring, Isaura Valdes and Brian Hing were recognized with Top Debaters awards; Lucia and Jayden won 1st Place and Isaura and Brian took home 3rd Place. The team’s goal is to reach the National Competition that will be determined Feb. 28 at Miami Dade College’s Kendall Campus. The two teams from the district that win will compete at Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass.
