  The Miami-Dade County Library branch in Miami Lakes is offering the following online and in-person classes.  Space is limited. In most cases, you must register in advance. Free 2022 Hurricane preparation guides are available at all branches.

Homework Help & Tutoring Program -- In Person  Funded in part by The Children’s Trust

Sat. Oct. 8, 15, 22, 29, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m.  Certified teachers meet students in small groups for an hour to tutor them in reading, math and science.  Grades K-12

Hot Mess Canvas

Wed., Oct. 5  4 p.m. - 5 p.m.  How do you create art out of a mess? By spreading acrylic paint all over a canvas and adding shapes and words made with a Cricut machine and sticky vinyl. Materials provided.

Ages 9+.

Tai Chi for Beginners 

Thurs., Oct. 6, 13, 20, 27,  11 a.m. - Noon.  Learn gentle movements to increase strength, flexibility and balance. Ages 18+.

Florida Licensing on Wheels (FLOW)

Fri., Oct. 7  10 a.m. - 2 p.m.  Renew a driver’s license, order a replacement, get an ID card, renew a vehicle registration or purchase a specialty license plate.  Ages 18+.

Talking is Teaching: Talk, read, sing for toddlers in dos idiomas

Tues., Oct. 11, 18, 25  11 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.  Stories, songs and activities for toddlers and caregivers in English and Spanish.  Ages 18 mos. - 3.

Perler Bead Craft: Sugar Skull Design.

Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month.  Wed., Oct. 12  4 p.m. - 5 p.m.  Perler beads a multi-colored that can be fused to make pixel art. Create a sugar skull design. 

Ages 10+.

Bee Kind - The importance of native bees and honeybees

Sat., Oct. 15   2 p.m. - 3 p.m.  A workshop about bees designed for kids. Take home your own pollinator hotel. Presented by the University of Florida, Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences Extension. Materials will be provided.  Ages 6 - 12.

Chess Enthusiasts Club

Tues., Oct. 18  6 p.m. - 7 p.m.  Share your skills and play with other fans of the game.  Ages 8+.

Scratch Coding Basics - Online Class

Mon., Oct. 24  4 p.m. - 5 p.m.  Learn to make your own interactive games, animation, art and stories using the online platform Scrach.

Ages 8 - 12.

Turtle Tales and Tortoise Encounter

Tues., Oct. 25 4:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. Meet Jocko and Pebble, Redfoot tortoises. There will be stories and a take-home craft.

Up to Age 12.

Decorate your own Halloween mask

Wed., Oct. 26  4 p.m. - 5 p.m.  Workshop led by artist David Sexton. A variety of mask templates and supplies to color and decorate your mask will be provided. Made possible by the Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board.  Ages 8 - 18.

Virtual author series with Mark Muncy

Wed., Oct. 26. 6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.  Zoom with science fiction author Mark Muncy about the five scariest places in So. Fla., then a Q&A with the author.

Ages 19+.

Teen Library Card Design Contest Finale

Sat., Oct. 29 1:30 - 3 p.m. Three winning designs revealed, plus an art lesson with environmental artist Dayna Cortes.

Ages 13 - 19.

    The library at 6699 Windmill Gate Rd. is open Mon. - Thurs., 9:30 a.m. - 8 p.m.; Fri. and Sat. 9:30 a.m. - 6 p.m. It is closed Sundays and some Mondays.
