Students in Miami Lakes Educational Center’s Culinary Program will return to Orlando in February to compete in the Universal Orlando Handheld Competition. The team’s Top 4 finish during the Dec. 2 contest at the University of Central Florida’s College of Hospitality allowed them to advance to the finals.
“Our student chefs participate in this competition for a chance to have their handheld dish showcased at the park,” David Galarce, magnet program lead at Miami Lakes Educational Center, wrote in an email. Chefs from Universal Studios will visit the school for a cooking session before the team heads to Orlando.
Their winning sandwich is the Curry Kraut Cruncher, crispy pork schnitzel (thin breaded pork cutlet) on a pretzel bun with tangy sauerkraut, bread and butter pickles and a tarragon/grain mustard aioli.
