School Board endorses 2014 Back to School Safety Flyer

As proposed by Chair Perla Tabares Hantman, the Miami-Dade School Board unanimously voted to endorse the 2014 “Welcome Back to School” Safety Flyer for distribution during the first week of school.

For the past eight years, the Community Traffic Safety Team (CTST), a team of multi-jurisdictional agencies under the auspices of the Florida Department of Transportation, has partnered with the District to promote student pedestrian/bicycle safety in the community.

“The CSTS recognizes that student pedestrian safety initiatives at the classroom level are an important component of overall traffic safety in our school and surrounding communities,” said Hantman. “To that end, the CTST encourages parents and student drivers to folio posted signs for school speed zones and crosswalks and parking laws.”

To promote this initiative, the 2014 safety flyer, translated into Spanish and Haitian Creole, will be distributed to all District schools via the District's Weekly Briefing format and postings on school websites. The messages are short and simple, but there is great potential for saving lives and avoiding costly police enforcement violations.
