South Florida Educational Federal Credit Union (SFEFCU) and Miami Lakes Educational Center are opening a Jaguars Credit Union, a student-run branch inside the school. A grand opening ceremony took place on Friday, April 11.

Jaguars Credit Union is a joint effort between SFEFCU, school administrators, faculty and students. A select group of student volunteers will run the branch under the supervision and guidance of SFEFCU staff. They will be developing a business plan for the high school branch, planning and creating marketing pieces, and performing transactions for their fellow high school members.

Students can benefit from the Credit Union products, including owning a savings account, a student checking account, a free ATM or debit card, free 24/7 access to accounts via online banking, bank-by-phone, eAlerts, mobile banking and iPhone and Android apps, a college tuition savings account and an opportunity to apply for a Credit Union scholarship.

Beginning with Goleman Senior High School in 2007, SFEFCU's in-school branch program has expanded its reach and is active in 11 high schools. Student volunteers receive hands-on experience and perform all duties from accepting membership applications to processing deposits. The goal is for students to become financially educated, learn money managements skills and gain real-world work experience.
