Government Thursday, March 14, 2019

The Autism Soccer Foundation announces its first annual Autism Soccer Walk on Saturday, April 6, at Amelia Earhart Park located at 401 E. 65 Street in Hialeah, from 8:30 a.m. to noon. The event is free and family-friendly, all are welcomed to attend.
The Foundation’s ambassador, the globally renowned former Colombian soccer player, Carlos “El Pibe” Valderrama, will be in attendance along with representatives from the embassy. The walk will begin with a formal opening ceremony, followed by a 1.5 mile walk around the park. In addition, there will be a kids’ zone, food trucks, live music and appearances by local celebrities.
The Autism Soccer Foundation is partnering with the Embassy of Qatar in Washington, D.C. because of a shared commitment to use sports to make a positive impact on people’s lives and to promote greater connections between people of various backgrounds and cultures. It is part of the Foundation’s larger effort to raise awareness about autism, promote inclusion in sports and teach children with autism spectrum disorder soccer skills in a safe and supportive environment.
The Autism Soccer Walk comes on the heels of a historic development in Florida’s autism awareness movement. A bill proposed by state senator Annette Taddeo recently passed, officially recognizing April 1-7 as Autism Soccer Awareness Week in Florida. During the week, Floridians are encouraged to support children with autism to engage in sports, including soccer, in order to emphasize the value of teamwork and to help them build self-confidence.
“All is needed is love, patience and compassion to create room for those whose abilities might be a little different than ours” said Oscar Amuz, founder and president of Autism Soccer Foundation when asked about his motivation to organize the Autism Soccer Walk.
