State Representative Manny Diaz Jr. (R-Hialeah) and Senator Anitere Flores (R-Miami-Dade) have proposed legislation (HB 313) that would incentivize school districts to designate one elementary school as a “Gender-Specific School.”
The Gender Specific School would have grade level boy’s classes and grade level girl’s classes in core subject areas.
“All of our students learn differently, we want to encourage diverse educational settings and options for all of our students and parents across Florida” said Diaz.
Broward Superintendent Robert Runcie believes that “single gender opportunities provide choice and innovation options to meet the diverse learning and social emotional needs of our students.”
“This bill will provide students the opportunity to be educated in an atmosphere that will facilitate learning and best fit their educational needs” said Flores. “As a supporter of parental choice, as well as a product of gender specific education, I know how valuable this experience can be for students.”
The bill, when signed into law, would be effective July 1, 2014.
