Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Junior Cadets won third place overall in the Running Hose event and won the Sportsmanship Award during the annual Florida State Firefighters Association State Firematics competition two weeks ago in Plantation, Florida.
The event tested the skills of cadets and firefighters from Florida in a series of drills against other fire departments, including climbing ladders, running hoses, and screwing the hose onto a fire rig in record time.
The firefighters described the event as a fine line between speed and control.
Miami Dade Fire Rescue Captain Abe Iglesias, a Miami Lakes resident, is the program’s Junior Cadet advisor and his two kids are in the program as well, according to the fire department.
