Miami Lakes Branch Library announced the following programs that are available for the public during March:
For Children and Families:
STEM Saturdays – Launch bottle rockets, Enjoy an interactive workshop where attendees can send their own bottle rocket into the sky. Experience a hands-on lesson where FIU undergraduate and medical students teach how to take rocket science skills to new heights. Scheduled at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 3.
Science in the City – Enjoy hands-on lessons infused with experiments to spark interest in STEM. Each new lesson builds upon the previous lesson. For ages 8-18 years old. Space is limited so contact branch to register. Meets at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 24.
Homeschool Science Class – Children learn how to create different science projects. Space is limited. Contact branch to register. Scheduled at noon on Wednesday, March 21.
iLUMA (inter-generational literacy using music and art) is an arts integration program that combines music, literature, world culture and art with reading comprehension, memory and listening skills. Program is open to children from VPK to 5th grade and seniors looking to improve their memory skills. Presented by the South Florida Chamber Ensemble at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 21.
Library Lego Club – Imagination is key as participants build and create with LEGO. All ages are welcome at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 17.
Movies and Stories for Kids – Favorite movies for family and friends. Call the branch for movie listings. Event presented by Town of Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board at 3 p.m. on Wednesdays, March 7, 14, 21 and 28.
Talking is Teaching. Talk, Read, Sing for Toddlers en dos idiomas – Bilingual stories, songs and activities for toddlers. Best for ages 18 months to 3 years old. Space is limited. Scheduled at 11 a.m. on Thursdays, March 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29.
Paws to Read – A reading program designed to improve the literacy skills of children through the assistance of therapy dogs who serve as literacy mentors. Parents may bring a book for choose one from the library collection. Event scheduled at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 10.
Mario Kart Tournament – Attention Gamers! Challenge friends and compete for a prize by playing Mario Kart 8 for WiiU. Winners move on to the final rounds at the Main Library’s FandomFest on Saturday, April 12. Contact branch to register. Open to ages 8 to 18 years. Schedule: 10 to 11 a.m., Children’s registration and practice; 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Children’s tournament; 2 to 3 p.m., Teen registration and practice; and 3 to 5:30 p.m., Teen tournament. Scheduled for Saturday, March 31 from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
For Teens:
Dungeons and Dragons and more - Play this fantasy role playing game and create your own adventure. Also play Chess, Magic: The Gathering, Risk and more. For ages 12 and up at 5:30 p.m. on Mondays, March 5, 12 and 19.
Teen Club Presents: Teen Tech Week – Challenge yourself and friends with Nintendo Switch gaming. Scheduled for Tuesday, March 6 at 5 p.m.
Teen Club – Play video games, watch anime, draw, play Dungeons & Dragons, or discuss books, at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, March 13 and 27.
Fact or Fictions? Get the Real News! With so much information from so many different sources - TV, social media, blogs, news websites, can you tell the difference between real news and fake news? Be a part of the News Literacy Project and pick up skills needed to separate fact from fiction. Presented in partnership with the News Literacy Project and made possible by the Knight Foundation on Tuesday, March 27, at 4 p.m.
For Adults:
Meditation Classes – Join in for meditation derived from Raja Yoga, a discipline that helps develop inner calm, clear thinking and personal well being. Scheduled for 11 a.m. on Fridays, March 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30.
Book Discussion Group – This month’s title is “Their Eyes Were Watching God” by Zora Neal Hurston. Scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 20.
USCIS Information Table - United States Citizenship and Immigration Service staff will provide information, materials and answer general questions about the citizenship process at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, March 26.
Mario Diaz-Balart Outreach Table - A member of Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart’s staff will be available to discuss federal issues and address any concerns a constituent may have with a federal agency, at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 28.
Miami Lakes Branch Library is located at 6699 Windmill Gate Road and is open Monday and Tuesday from noon to 8 p.m., and Wednesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The branch is closed on Sundays. For more information, call 305-822-6520.
