Miami Lakes Branch Library plans May events

Miami Lakes Branch Library announced the following programs that are available for the public during April:
For Children and Families:
Movies and Stories for Kids – Watch favorite movies with family and friends. Movies being shown this month are “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” (PG); “Mona,” (PG); “Kung Fu Panda” (PG); “Max” (PG) and “Ralph Breaks the Internet” (PG). Events made possible by the Town of Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board at 3 p.m. on Wednesdays, May 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29.
Talking is Teaching. Talk, Read, Sing for Toddlers – Stories, songs and activities for toddlers. Best for ages 18 months to 3 years old at 11 a.m. on Thursdays, May 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30
Baby and Me Group – A free 10-week series giving parents and caregivers an opportunity to develop close relationships with their infants ages birth to 6 months. Space is limited, registration is required and closes once group is full. Series runs weekly from 10 a.m. to noon on Tuesdays from May 14 to July 16. Program sponsored by The Children’s Trust. Science in the City – Earth-bound Astronauts! Join for an augmented and virtual reality experience that is sure to be out of this world! Best for ages 8-12 years with hands-on lessons infused with experiments to spark interest in STEM. Space is limited, contact branch to register. Event made possible by Manifezt Foundation at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 25.
The Art of Taiko Drumming – A fun-filled performance covering the history of Taiko and the music of Japan followed by a chance to play on the big drums. Suitable for all ages and made possible by the Town of Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 4.
Kawaii Mochi Making Workshop - Learn how to make this yummy, gooey rice-based Japanese dessert in a hands-on workshop. Materials will be provided. Space is limited and contact branch to register. Best for ages 8-18 years at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 11.
For Teens:
Teen Club – Play video games, watch anime, draw, participate in STEAM activities and move. Contact the branch for details. Events scheduled at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, May 14 and 28.
Retro Game Night - Play retro video games on the big screen or classic board games around the table. Suitable for ages 8-18 years at 4:30 p.m. on Mondays, May 6, 13 and 20.
Teen Club Presents Avengers: Infinity War PG-13 - The Avengers assemble their power in order to fight their collective enemy Thanos before he can wreak havoc on the entire planet. Made possible by the Town of Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 7.
For Adults:
American Sign Language Workshop – A six-week workshop designed to provide students with a language and cultural foundation in American Sign Language and Deaf culture. Learn the alphabet, everyday signs and more. Space is limited. Contact branch to register. Best for ages 8 years and up at 2 p.m. on Saturdays, May 4, 11 and 18.
Purls of Wisdom – Learn basic knitting and stitching. Materials will be provided. Best for ages 18 and up at 2 p.m. on Tuesdays, May 7, 14, 21 and 28.
Strum the Lute: Tai Chi for Beginners – Practice this ancient tradition and learn gentle movements to increase strength, flexibility and balance. Class is led by library staff. Best for ages 18 and up at 11 a.m. on Wednesdays, May 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29.
Meditation – Join in mediation derived from Raja Yoga, a discipline that helps develop inner calm, clear thinking and personal well-being. Meets at 11 a.m. on Fridays, May 3, 10 17, 24 and 31.
Rex + Flow - This one-of-a-kind fitness format is kind to joints without compromising the intensity of a workout. Prepare to be challenged for ages 18 years and up at 12:30 p.m. on Monday, May 20.
Book Discussion Group - This months selection is “The View From Castle Rock” by Alice Munro at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 21.
Mario Diaz-Balart Outreach Table - A member of Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart’s staff will be available to discuss federal issues and address any concerns a constituent may have with a federal agency, at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 22.
Miami Lakes Branch Library is located at 6699 Windmill Gate Road and is open Monday and Tuesday from noon to 8 p.m., and Wednesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The branch is closed on Sundays. For more information, call 305-822-6520.,
