Lisa Deyarza’s students at Miami Lakes Middle School won first place at the national We the People National Invitational in Washington D.C.
As part of the national competition, the young scholars of law and government tested their knowledge for Supreme Court cases, documents, current events and the U.S. Constitution.
After the students won the state competition, they were seeking $35,000 in expenses to attend the competition in the Nation’s Capitol.
They set up a GoFundMe page to raise the money.
They succeeded and finished in first place on the biggest stage for middle school competition for law and government and the first Florida school to win the prestigious honor.
Florida U.S. Senator Rick Scott posed for a picture with the national champions, saying he is so proud they represented the state of Florida.
Miami Lakes Mayor Manny Cid also praised the students for their accomplishment. “Congratulations to the Miami Lakes Middle School Warriors legal team for winning the We the People National Championship in Washington D.C.,” he said. “The future is bright in Miami Lakes.”
