A police officer from Palm Springs North who died while on duty was remembered by loved ones and friends when a street sign was unveiled a few blocks from his family’s home.
Larry E.
Marrero, a 28-year law enforcement veteran and a detective with Miami Beach police, collapsed while at the police station on Nov. 28, 2018.
He died at a nearby hospital.
Relatives, government leaders and two dozen police officers from several departments gathered Nov. 25 for the sign dedication at Northwest 87th Avenue near Northwest 175th Street.
That’s when a stretch of the avenue near the border of
Miami Lakes and Palm Springs North was renamed Sgt. Larry E.
Marrero Drive.
Miami-Dade County commissioners approved Commissioner
Esteban Bovo’s resolution for the recognition for Marrero.
Marrero, 58, served in multiple units during his career, including road patrol; as a homicide detective; with marine patrol; as a school resource officer and, for two decades, was a member of Miami Beach police department’s SWAT unit.
Bovo said on social media that he was “deeply honored to have had the opportunity to sponsor the street designation...”
Marrero’s survivors include his wife Jeanette Marrero and two children.
