Town Council Candidates to debate April 25

Government By Alexandra Herrera, Reporter Thursday, April 18, 2024

Ahead of the upcoming runoff election, Miami Lakes town council candidates Esther Colon and Bryan Morera will present their campaign positions during a forum at Town Hall on April 25.

Former Miami-Dade County Mayor Alex Penelas will be the moderator and will accept questions for candidates from residents via email beforehand or during the event.

Morera, 32, and Colon, 70, won first and second place respectively in the April 9 special election to fill Seat 6. Votes were so close between Colon and candidate Hector Abad that a machine recount was held and found Colon stayed in second place.

The winner of the runoff election on April 30 will serve until Nov. 2026. He or she will replace former Vice Mayor Carlos O. Alvarez, who resigned in November.

Residents may email questions to Penelas at meetthecandidates@miamilakes-fl.gov.

The debate will be livestreamed on the town’s website and on its YouTube channel, at www.youtube.com/@MiamiLakesFL.

It will be held at 6:30 p.m. in council chambers at Town Hall,  6601 Main St. and is open to the public.
