For the ninth consecutive year, the Town of Miami Lakes has been recognized as a Playful City USA community. Playful City communities are acknowledged for making a commitment to play and physical activity by developing unique local action plans to increase the quantity and quality of play in their community.
“It’s an honor for our community top once again receive this special recognition,” said Mayor Manny Cid. “We pride ourselves in ensuring that there is access to playgrounds and activities for all ages in an inclusive manner.”
This year’s application featured the Town’s new Youth Center, nicknamed “The Spot,” which opened last November. “The Spot,” located close to local middle and high schools, offers a variety of quality innovative programs in such areas as arts, culture, education, health and wellness, recreation and skill development.
By focusing on the “play” aspect of the Youth Center through the Open Hang Nights and fun field trips, the Town has seen an increase in participation. In addition, a Youth Council, comprised of middle and high school students, was created to make decisions on programming and workshops, thus providing additional opportunities to assume leadership roles while building valuable skills for their future.
Playful City USA is a national program from KaBOOM! that celebrates and promotes local policies that increase play opportunities for children.
