Monsignor Edward Pace High School hosted Career Day on February 6. Students from 9th through 12th grades had the opportunity to speak with 75 professionals from various career paths, and the school enjoyed a motivational session with Hector Picar, an engineer who, due to a serious accident, is now a double amputee working with engineering equipment for people with physical impairments such as his own.
Throughout the day, students were able to interact with many professionals, such as lawyers, doctors, magazine editors, broadcast media specialists, veterinarians, and government employees among others, in a classroom setting so that each student could sample as many speakers' presentations as possible.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue gave a special presentation in the parking lot, demonstrating emergency techniques in the case of a serious car accident or a building fire. Other speakers, such as Alexia Echeverria, editor of Venue magazine, had samples to distribute to the students, such as publications of her magazine and also brought treats for them.
The NBC 6 News team went in depth with the various career paths students could pursue in the media, and the current Academy of Mass Communications students learned from this first-hand experience. The Career Day coordinator, Celia Rouco, and fellow staff members are already working diligently in planning next year's career day for Pace High School.
