Cruising for a cause

For Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office Miami Lakes District Dep. Robin Amador, the fight to end childhood cancer is personal.

Amador’s cousin who died of leukemia as well as the son of a fellow deputy who also died of childhood cancer is what led him to join the Mystic Force Foundation’s first responder parade.

The parade, which happened on September 5, invites different law enforcement agencies from the South Florida area to bring their cars and bring cheer to cancer patients.

Now in its ninth year, the car parade started at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital in South Miami and worked its way to Joe DiMaggio’s Children’s Hospital in Hollywood. During the parade, kids watched from their hospital windows while some who felt up to it may stand on the sidewalk.

“It’s a multi-agency parade, so they call everybody in,” Amador said.

Agencies are encouraged to not only bring their cars, but also any special cars with decals or vintage cars. Some departments also like to bring characters likes Batman and Spider-Man.

“It gets them away the kids [and] the parents,” Amador said.
