Miami Lakes Councilmember Manny Cid, who was recently appointed to the National League of Cities (NLC) 2016 Finance, Administration and Intergovernmental Relations Committee, attended the group’s city conference in Washington D.C. last month.

During his first meeting, Cid said the committee members discussed the nation’s federal advocacy agenda of protecting tax exemptions for municipal bonds and comprehensive tax reform.

Cid also had the opportunity to discuss the town's zip code issue with the U.S. Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Government Affairs.

The two committees, which members include U.S. Senators John McCain (R-Arizona) and Rand Paul (R-Kentucky), have joined the investigation into the United States Postal Service’s refusal to grant Miami Lakes its own  zip code, Cid said.

Cid said an independent zip code for Miami Lakes means saving on premium costs on auto insurance for town residents and help with branding and economic development issues.

“Both committee are still on the issue,” he said. “They were not happy the post office haven’t provided us with the information. We are moving the ball forward on an independent Miami Lakes zip code.”
