Burlington Stores, Inc. celebrated the opening of its new store in town with a $5,000 donation to Miami Lakes K-8 Center.

“Our eight department heads will meet and decide what they want,” said Principal Yanelys Ferrer about how the gift may be spent. Asst. Principals Shontel Holts-Rich and Veronika Sasturrias joined her at the ceremony.

The school, at 14250 NW 67th Ave., has 75 teachers and 1,200 students.

The New Jersey-based off price retailer’s Miami Lakes location is its 1,650th store, and it has a new design. Gone are the long racks of clothes; shoppers can now browse in mini-boutiques to find bargains.

Burlington partners with non-profit Adopt A Classroom, so that teachers don’t have to spend their own money on classroom needs.

“Corporate selects the school,” Store Manager Yaliz Rivera said. “It’s a Burlington tradition when we open a store to give the donation.”

A dozen customers waited for store doors to open in the Red Palmetto Shoppes, the former site of an Office Depot, at 16000 NW 57th Ave. It sells apparel and accessories for men, women, kids, babies, pets, and home decor.

It is open daily at 9 a.m., closes at 10:30 p.m. Monday - Saturday and at 11 p.m. on Sunday.
