Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Maj. Jose “Gonzo” Gonzalez shared a fable during his remarks to the Miami Lakes Chamber of Commerce on May 14.

“If you don’t leave the cheese out, the mouse won’t come,” Gonzalez said.

Crimes in most categories in town are at record low levels, though there were 35 auto burglaries in the first quarter of 2025. It was an 8% drop compared to the first three months of 2024, and he wants it to be lower.

Suspects look for guns or valuables that are kept in autos.

“If you leave the doors open, you’re making it easy for them,” Gonzalez said.

He oversees 39 sworn deputies, six sergeants, a lieutenant and four civilians. He told 80 business professionals at the luncheon about teamwork, mentorship and crime fighting initiatives.

Residents will notice deputies’ cars patrolling with rooftop light bars on (but without sirens) to increase the visibility of law enforcement.

The lighted patrol cars may also be stationed at town entrances on weekend nights.

Gonzalez described how he brought license plate readers to town in a program supported by the council.

In 2022, the devices helped him and deputies catch a bank robber who worked up a sweat while fleeing and was caught in a Hialeah apartment complex’s gym, pretending to exercise, Gonzalez said.

Residents who wish to have deputies keep an eye on their homes while they are on vacation may request a watch order by calling 305-827-4020. Homeowners will be asked about cars that are expected to be at the property and can expect a daily check, he said.
