Take a drive down Northwest 60th Avenue and the distinctive blue and white buildings of Cordis will stand out.

The 69-year-old firm manufactures devices for cardiac patients, and its global headquarters is in Miami Lakes.

The company is expanding, and plans to fill up to 300 new, full-time jobs in town.

Its campus in Business Park East is also growing.

In December, the company leased a nearly 87,000-square-foot warehouse across the street from its headquarters.

The new building is at 14100 NW 60th Ave. and is to be used for product distribution.

Cordis also plans to renovate and modernize offices and some manufacturing capabilities in its headquarters building.

“Cordis is proud to deepen our commitment to Miami Lakes, where our company was founded and where global cardiovascular innovations continue

to be developed,” Champ Davis, chief operating officer of officer of Cordis, said in a March 17 news release.

“Enhancing our corporate headquarters, research and development and manufacturing capabilities creates high-quality jobs and leverages the strong Florida workforce that has powered Cordis for decades,” he said.

With its products, the company serves more than 21 million patients each year in more than 65 countries, Davis said.

The state awarded Cordis an up to $2.5 million High Impact Performance Incentive Program grant. It will be paid in installments when job creation milestones are reached, the company said.

World-wide, Cordis -- owned by the private equity firm Hellman & Friedman -- has 4,100 employees.

In Miami Lakes, there are approximately 300 full-time staffers and 60 contractors at its 250,000- square-foot campus.

The new hires will double the workforce in town when all are on board. Some employees have been with the firm for 20 to 30 years, a spokeswoman said.

Dr. William Murphy Jr. started Cordis in his Miami Lakes garage in 1957, the company said. Among his patents are several for early versions of pacemakers.

A 2023 New York Times obituary described how Murphy and a colleague invented a vinyl blood bag that replaced breakable bottles and served soldiers during the Korean War.
