Main Street Players set auditions for "Real Women Have Curves"

Community Thursday, October 6, 2016

The Main Street Players is seeking actors for a very funny and charming play that deals with the immigration experience in East Los Angeles in 1987.

Real Women Have Curves will be the first play of the newly formed Main Street Players professional theatre group in 2017 scheduled for performances at the Main Street Playhouse from February  3 to February 26.

Written by Josefina Lopez, the play will be directed by Ricky J. Martinez.
Auditions are scheduled from 7 to 10 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday, October 17-18, with call backs from 7 to 10 p.m. on Wednesday, October 19.

The play takes place in a tiny sewing factory in the sweltering summer and centers on five Mexican-American women who are just barely getting by, each haunted by their immigration status.

This play with a big heart is based upon the playwright’s personal experiences and is a microcosm of the Latina immigrant experience. Actors will receive compensation for their performance in the production.

The characters include:
Ana, female, 18, plump and pretty, sister of Estela, daughter of Carmen. She is a recent high school graduate and a young feminist.

Estela, female, 24, plump, plain looking, owner of the “Garcia Sewing Factory.”
Carmen, female, 48, a short large women, mother of Ana and Estela. She has a talent for storytelling.

Pancha, female, 32, a huge woman who is very mellow in her ways, but quick with her tongue.
Rosali, female, 29, only a bit plump in comparison to the rest of the women. She is sweet and easygoing.

Audition requirements include a recent headshot and updated resume, two contrasting monologues that together make up a five minute slot (one of which should be done with a standard Mexican accent), professional attire, and any foreseeable time conflicts during the rehearsal process.
