Luis Collazo, the former chair of Miami Lakes’ Elderly Affairs Committee, was recognized with the Latino Center on Aging’s Community Advocate Golden Age Award on September 30 at the organization’s 26th annual banquet.
In addition to his multi-year term as chair of the Elderly Affairs Committee, Collazo has served on the South Florida Behavioral Health Network Finance Committee and the state’s Disability Rights Florida Board among others for the past 20 years having devoted a large part of his career to community and public service.
“We are pleased to present the 2016 Latino Center on Aging Community Advocate Golden Age Award to Luis Collazo, recognizing his commitment to the community from the local level to the state level,” said Mario E. Tapia, president and CEO of Latino Center on Aging.
“It is a great honor to receive this award recognizing my advocacy efforts,” said Collazo. “As most of us engaged in community advocacy work, we are not driven by the recognition, but more by the desire to serve. I look forward to continuing my work as long as God gives me the opportunity to continue serving our seniors and those less fortunate.”
The Golden Age Award is given every year to individuals who have made significant contributions through their work including effective leadership, public policy initiatives and community involvement.
Proclamations honoring the event and the Latino Center on Aging were presented to Tapia and event chair Maria Hidalgo Diaz from State Senator Rene Garcia, Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez, Commissioner Esteban Bovo Jr., and Miami Lakes Mayor Michael Pizzi.
