Hialeah-Miami Lakes Senior High School’s Model United Nations team took home 2nd Place from the Academic WorldQuest Regional Competition. The HML Global Trojans participated at the March 13 competition at Florida International University’s main campus. Academic WorldQuest is organized by World Affairs Council of Miami, according to a release from the school. It challenges students to deepen their understanding of international affairs and issues among nations. Students competed in 11 rounds against 26 teams from Miami-Dade and Broward counties. They engaged in topics such as international organizations; geopolitics; global economic trends; environmental challenges; regional studies and current international developments. Students must demonstrate a strong command of world affairs, quick thinking, teamwork and connect historical context and contemporary global issues, a release from the school said.

“I am proud to announce that our Global Trojans placed 2nd overall!” Rukayet Adebisi, Model United Nations Faculty Advisor, wrote in an email. As part of their 2nd place prize, the team was invited to visit the United States Southern Command in Doral. Adebisi said the team had many new students and called their performance “something to be proud of.”  Shown above, from left: Kenneth Herencia; Jaendra Eubanks; Brian Hing; Lucia Bring; Teacher Rukayat Adebisi; Zachary Webb; Michael Alvarez; Sophia Estevez; Isaura Valdes and Carolina Poretti.
