The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office honored Fla. Rep. Alex Rizo, R-Hialeah at the May 20 town council meeting in Miami Lakes. Undersheriff Christopher Carothers presented a letter to Rizo on behalf of Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz. Carothers described legislation Rizo sponsored, including the Halo law, which requires a 25-foot buffer between the public and police, firefighters, corrections officers or paramedics first responders while they are at work. Those who are warned and remain in the buffer zone are said to be obstructing justice and subject to fines and jail time.
“Obviously the Halo bill is so critical in the way that we do things, that law allows us to be safe,” Carothers said. He also mentioned Rizo’s efforts to create safer roads for the first responders in town. Rizo thanked the sheriff’s department, deputies and town staff.
“I’m humbled that you would take this time … this is what I signed up to do, is to serve everyone in this room, to serve everyone that’s in my district and it really protects the true heroes in our society,” Rizo said.
