Miami Lakes lowers speed limit to 25 mph in residential neighborhoods

Starting this month, drivers in Miami Lakes will need to slow down when traveling through residential neighborhoods.

The Town of Miami Lakes is reducing speeds to 25 mph throughout much of the municipality.

Signs that warn of the new speed limits are being installed, a process that will take place over six phases and will continue through the fall.

“[It is an] effort to increase safety of vehicular and pedestrian travel,” Public Works Director Omar Santos Baez said in an email.

Residents will start to see posted speed limits lowered from 30 mph to 25 mph on residential streets that are maintained by the town.

Santos Baez said the change will not affect traffic on the county roads: Northwest 67 Avenue, Northwest 57 Avenue and Northwest 87 Avenue.

Speeds on privately-owned roads will not be changed either, though drivers should still follow all limits posted on signs.

The installation of new speed limit signs will start on the northwest side of town.

Miami Lakes entered an interlocal agreement in 2022 with Miami-Dade County to change the speed limits and had awaited final approval for the signs.

Enforcement will begin as soon as signs are installed and police will ticket drivers, the town said.
