With the school year ended and kids on summer vacation, officials in the Town of Miami Lakes will be enforcing the curfew that is already in effect for the town center. Residents and visitors may see more officers from Miami-Dade Police patrolling the neighborhood.
“We’ve seen an increase in unsupervised juveniles roaming downtown without adult supervision and we’re going to start enforcing the curfew, especially during the summer months,” said Lt. Jose Gonzalez, who leads the Miami-Dade Police district in Miami Lakes.
Curfew for minors begins at 8 p.m. Anyone younger than 18 will need to be accompanied by an adult and IDs will be checked. One parent or guardian may chaperone up to three minors, who may include the adult’s children.
“We want people to know that the town, The Graham Companies and the police department are working together to enforce the already existing curfew for minors,” said Laura Ratliff, vice president of Graham Commercial at The Graham Companies, which is a major property owner in the town center. “It’s a combined effort to ensure Main Street remains a safe, family-friendly environment.”
On weekend evenings, pedestrian access to Main Street will be limited to entrances near the movie theater, Northwest 67th Avenue and New Barn Road.
Following the usual schedule, Main Street will be closed to vehicular traffic from 6 p.m. on those nights.
