A group of local student-athletes and coaches were recognized for their stellar performances by The Miami Herald, as they were named to the All-Dade Teams for baseball, softball, water polo, tennis, volleyball and flag football, and the recipients of 2014 All-Dade Athletic Awards.
American’s Brianna Futch was named girls’ co-bowler of the Year, while Mater Academy’s Emily Acosta was named Player of the Year for flag football, and her coach Luis Sanchez was named Coach of the Year.
Pace’s Anthony Serro was named boys’ basketball Coach of the Year for Class 4A-2A, and American’s Ricky Gutierrez was named 8A-6A co-coach of the Year for boys’ baseball.
Members of the All-Dade 8A-6A baseball First Team included American senior pitcher Ronnie Williams (7-1, 83 strikeouts and an 1.01 ERA), and his teammates, junior third baseman Romy Gonzalez (.377 batting average, six dingers and 34 RBI), and senior outfielder Kevin Williams (.435 batting average, 12 RBI and 20 stolen bases).
The First Team also includes Mater Academy junior outfielder Danny Reyes (.408 batting average and two homer’s) and his teammate, senior utility player Mike Mediavilla (6-4, 1.70 ERA, 65 strikeouts and .382 batting average).
Second team players include American senior second baseman Eric Gonzalez and Mater Academy senior outfielder Angel Ortiz; and Third Team members include Goleman junior second baseman Jonathan Jhones and American senior shortstop Cabrera Edison.
Honorable mention included American players Matt Ruiz, Kristopher Perez, Alex Blanco and Andy Figueroa; Hialeah Miami Lakes’ Brandon Morffy, Alejandro Llerena, Marcus Smith and Gilberto Rivera; and Mater Academy players Deyvid Silva, Michael Escarra, Lazaro Rodriguez and Alex Rodriguez.
4A-2A Second Team players included Pace’s Lorenzo Hampton, and Third Team members were Mater Lakes junior pitcher Jesus Hernandez; Dade Christian senior pitcher Anthony Munoz; Pace junior catcher Elliott Cutillas and Pace player Andres Sanchez.
Honorable mention included Pace players Anthony Boix and Jonathan Reyes-Diaz.
For softball, making the 8A-6A First Team was Goleman senior catcher Angie Montalvo (.558 batting average, four diners and 40 RBI), and her teammate sophomore designated hitter Kristy Veiga. American sophomore designated hitter Kayleen Romero made the Second Team.
Third team members included American senior pitcher Andrea Rincon and senior infielder Alexandra Fernandez.
Honorable mentions included American players Amanda Sosa, Chastity Velez, Vanessa Abre and Michelle Murch; and Goleman players Natalie Costero, Alexis Guzman, Vicky Morales and Jessica Costero.
Making the Second Team for Class 4A-2A was Mater Lakes junior pitcher Alexis Castroman and her teammates, Melanie Arauz and Alyssa Rodriguez were named as honorable mentions.
For Flag Football, the First Team included three Mater Academy players including wide receiver and defensive back Emily Acosta (41 catches for 585 yards, eight offensive touchdowns, 7 interceptions and four defensive touchdowns); quarterback and linebacker Alondra Angulo (1,453 yards, 24 touchdowns, seven interceptions and five defensive touchdowns); and wide receiver and linebacker Elexus Martin (18 catches, 354 yards, 41 flag pulls and 20 sacks); and two Pace players including wide receiver and defensive back Destiny Wilson (56 catches, 864 yards and 16 touchdowns and 14 interceptions), and quarterback and linebacker Yasbec Sosa (1,905 passing yards, 27 touchdowns, 60 flag pulls and four interceptions).
Second Team players included Mater Academy’s wide receiver and defensive back Silvia Diaz, wide receiver and linebacker Solamy Galvez, wide receiver and linebacker Kiara Estrada and wide receiver and defensive back Mercy Gonzalez; along with Pace’s Jasmine Rodriguez, and wide receiver and defensive back Bianca Toyos.
Honorable mentions included Mater Academy players Melanie Hernandez, Melanie Trespalacios and Karla Vargas; and Pace players Jennifer Darbouz, Thamar Peticar, Lena Amazon, Keshara Samuels and Tamara Smalls.
