A celebration of life will be held for Juan Campiz on March 11 at Vista Memorial Gardens in the chapel.
Campiz, who lived in Unincorporated Miami-Dade County, died in January. He was 98.
Campiz was a retired custodian with Miami-Dade County Public Schools and the oldest player on the Miami Lakes Geezers softball squad.
Geezer’s coordinator Dave Oliver called Campiz the team’s “No. 1 Idol” and “truly special.”
The town council and then Mayor Manny Cid awarded a proclamation to Campiz in 2023.
There was no real secret to his longevity, Campiz told The Miami Laker. It was simply a result of taking his medicine, eating right, trying to work out and avoiding stress.
If he didn’t play with the Geezers each week, he said he would feel tired.
Campiz played first base with the group of men in the club each week at Miami Lakes Optimist Park.
Campiz played baseball throughout his life, starting in his native Puerto Rico as a child and playing while living in New York and in Miami.
Known as “The Kid” on the Optimist Park field, Campiz was a Geezer for about 10 years. He was a widower and had three stepchildren.
Those who would like to pay respects to Campiz may visit between 6:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. at the chapel at Vista Memorial Gardens, at 5755 NW 142nd St.
