Florida International University swimming and diving student-athlete junior Alexa Bryant was named one of 14 honorees for the Conference USA Spirit of Service Award, the league office recently announced.
“What an honor for Alexa to get this recognition from C-USA. Alexa is a service-oriented, student-athlete that always keeps others in mind fist,” said head coach Randy Horner.
The honor recognizes the league's student-athletes’ significant community service endeavors, good academic standing and participation in their elected sport. The Spirit of Service award is presented three times throughout the season with these honorees representing winter sports: Swimming and diving, women's basketball, men's basketball, men's and women's track and field.
Bryant, a member of the 200 Medley relay team and 200 freestyle relay team, has been a crucial force in the pool for the Panthers. At the 2019 C-USA Swimming and Diving Championships, Bryant, along with the rest of the 200 free relay squad, finished in second place with a time of 1:31.39. Individually, she has picked up over five top-five finishes including a win against FCGU and UNF when she tapped in at 24.11 in the 50 Freestyle event.
Along with the swim team, Bryant volunteers to feed the homeless. Through the Chapman Partnership they were able to provide 200 people with meals for an evening. She also holds a leadership position with the FIU Student-Athlete Leadership Council (SALC).
As the communications director for the student group, Bryant is responsible for overseeing all communications strategies and assists with promoting student-athlete welfare and community engagement. Through SALC, Bryant has provided professional development seminars and organized opportunities for student-athletes to engage and built connections.
While achieving success in the pool and in the community, the junior also maintains a 3.95 GPA in dietetics and nutrition. Bryant dreams of one day becoming an obstetrician-gynecologist and specializing in fertility.
