Five local basketball teams compete in regionals

Local high school boys’ and girls’ basketball, five teams made it to the regionals but only one group is still alive while the others are taking an early Spring Break vacation.
Mater Academy defeated Cooper City, 71-53 and advanced to the regional semifinals in a showdown with McArthur on February 26.
The Lions defeated Goleman, 82-46, to win their third consecutive district championship.
McArthur (20-10) clobbered the Gators, 66-27, in the regional quarterfinals.
Mater Academy is 16-6 and 8-0 in district competition.
After winning the district championship for the third consecutive season, Mater Lakes Academy boys’ basketball team failed to get the job done in the regionals.
The Bears fell to Chaminade-Madonna, 75-54, in the regional quarterfinals last week.
Mater Lakes Academy finished the season 14-12 and recorded a 6-0 record in district play.
The Bears defeated Monsignor Edward Pace, 108-95, to capture the Bears’ third consecutive district title.
As the district runner-up, the Spartans fell to University, 87-53, in the regional quarterfinals, as Pace’s season came to an end as well. Pace finished the season 9-17.
Girls’ basketball
The 2019 season for Mater Academy girls’ basketball team was highlighted by winning their third consecutive district championship with a victory over Alonso and Trish Mourning High School.
The Lions swept the season series against their district rival.
After a regional quarterfinals victory over University (50-45), Mater Academy fell to South Broward, 49-45, in the regional semifinals. Mater Academy finished the season 11-10 and the No. 245 ranked team in the state.
They dominated several of their opponents including a 70-2 victory over Reagan, clobbered Hialeah Miami Lakes twice 71-1 and 65-3, scored 47 points against Westland Hialeah who put up only six points and left Mourning defenseless with a 61-8 victory in their second meeting of the regular season.
For Pace, the Spartans girls’ basketball team fell to Pine Crest, 42-37, in the regional quarterfinals as the Panthers avenged last season playoff lost to the Spartans.
Pace won the district championship with a 62-32 victory over Edison High School.
The Spartans finished the season 14-6 and 6-0 in district competition.
