Three local high school basketball teams were successful in capturing their respective District championships this past week.
Mater Academy boys’ basketball team captured the 16-8A District championship with a victory over Barbara Goleman, putting the Bears in the Regional quarterfinal. As the district’s runner-up, the Gators will play in the Regional quarterfinal.
American High boys’ basketball team defeated Miami High 49-43 to advance to the District 14-9A semifinals. The Patriots rebounded with a rally in the second half after trailing 24-7 at halftime.
American faced North Miami for the district title where the Patriots were winners in a 55-53 close game.
Mater Lakes Academy’s boys’ basketball team defeated Monsignor Pace 100-95 to secure their second consecutive regional playoff berth.
In a thrilling overtime contest, Mater Lakes took on Booker T. Washington in the 15-5A District championship game and emerged District champs with a 73-66 victory. It was the first district championship in the school’s young history.
