Barbara Goleman High’s wrestling team recently competed in the state championships.
After winning the district and regional championships, the Gators sent three players to compete in the state tournament at Silver Spray Arena in Kissimmee, Florida.
Raul Chavarry (152 pounds), Maximo Fernandez (182 pounds) and Shawn Rodriguez (220 pounds) were sent to bring home the state championships for the Gators who made their presence felt in district and regional competition.
Head coach Ray Manfito said he’s proud of his team’s performance this season.
“They have been working hard all summer and training season round,” Manfito said. “After that little by little they started picking it up. They have spent a lot of time on the mat.”
He said six seniors on the team made a big difference this season but a group of freshmen also demonstrated their wrestling skills on the mat.
“We beat HML, Doral and other top ranked teams by large margins,” Manfito said. “With the three freshmen, we should be good again next year.”
In his four years of coaching at Coleman, Manfito won two district titles and one regional championship which Fernandez won for his school.
He competed in the state tournament last year and finished in the top 25.
