Hialeah Gardens High new football head coach, Greg Wagner, who coached 27 years at Archbishop Curley-Notre Dame before it closed in May, helped his new team get back on the winning track, as the Gladiators defeated rival Westland Hialeah, 26-8, in front of a packed crowed.
The Gladiators, who finished 1-8 last season, handed Westland Hialeah its 35th consecutive loss, which is the third longest losing streak in county history.
The highlight of the game came in the first quarter when Hialeah Gardens running back Ernesto Gonzalez scored on a 35-yard touchdown run.
The Gladiators recorded 235 rushing yards for the game, while the defense held Westland Hialeah to 89 total offense yards.
Hialeah Gardens’ next opponent is Coral Park (0-1) on Thursday, August 31.
Columbus defeated Mater Academy, 45-7, as the Lions failed to stop the Explorers’ juggernaut.
